Play Therapy

“Toys are children's words and play is their language" Gary L. Landreth.

In a play therapy session, a child between the ages of 3 and 12 is able to choose toys and games and play with them in ways that are meaningful to him/her with the counselor honoring, witnessing, and looking for ways to help in this “language” of the child.

In Child-Centered Play Therapy, the child takes the lead with the counselor following and providing unconditional positive regard, empathy, and acceptance.  Solution-Focused Play Therapy is a more directive approach where the counselor may use specific toys or games to guide the play with a specific goal in mind.  Solution-Focused Play Therapy uncovers, identifies, and focuses on the individual’s unique strengths and gifts to work through problems.

Sandtray Therapy

Sandtray Therapy is a sensory modality that involves clients choosing miniature figures to place in a rectangular or circular box containing sand.  The client’s miniature choices, placement, arrangement, and even movement between items in the tray is a conscious and/or unconscious expression of the parts of themselves.  Sandtray allows clients to express themselves and work through experiences and feelings without using words purely through symbolism in the miniatures they have chosen.  In a session, the counselor may invite clients to “create their world,” allowing them control over what is shared and witnessed.

Psychotherapy

Psychotherapy, also known as talk therapy, is a communication-based interaction between a mental health provider and an individual or client, where a collaborative effort is made to assess, diagnose, and create treatment goals related to improving mental, emotional, and behavioral patterns in that client. In a session, a client can expect to talk about thoughts, feelings, and behaviors in a safe, confidential space, and may learn coping strategies and skills for improved mental health.  A client may be seen in person or use telehealth options.
